What happens in the body when anxiety rises?

How anxiety is felt in the body

Anxiety activates the body’s natural alarm system. A faster heartbeat, shallow breathing, muscle tension, sweating, stomach sensitivity and increased alertness may occur. Although uncomfortable, these sensations are often part of a protective stress response.

Why symptoms may intensify

Interpreting bodily changes as danger can strengthen the anxiety cycle. Lack of sleep, prolonged stress, uncertainty and high caffeine intake may also make sensations feel more intense.

What may help in the moment

Notice the contact of your feet with the floor, allow the breath to slow without forcing it, name objects around you and gently release shoulder tension. The aim is not to fight anxiety, but to recognise that it can rise and fall.

When to seek support

If anxiety significantly affects daily life, sleep, relationships or functioning, a professional assessment may be considered. This page provides general information and does not replace diagnosis or treatment.
